São Paulo, Brazil, July 24th, 2025 – Sungrow has secured official validation from Brazil’s National Electric System Operator (ONS) for all dynamic models of its inverters operating within the country. Industry sources confirm this signifies compliance with stringent standards, accurately replicating inverter behavior during electromechanical and electromagnetic transients. The approval underscores Sungrow's technical focus and role in grid modernization.
Response to Grid Vulnerabilities
A major 2023 blackout in Brazil highlighted critical needs for precise dynamic modeling of renewable plants, particularly concerning inverter-based resource behavior during disturbances like reactive power support and low-voltage ride-through (LVRT). Prompted by this event, the ONS initiated a structured validation program in October 2023 (Report RAP 0012/2023) to assess inverter and power plant controller (PPC) models, aiming to bolster grid simulation reliability.
Rigorous Two-Stage Validation
Working closely with the ONS, Sungrow subjected its inverters to extensive simulation testing. This involved PSCAD for electromagnetic transients and ANATEM for RMS-based electromechanical transients, analyzing events like faults and switching operations. The challenging process featured two critical phases:
Inverter Level 1 (L1): Validation used a semi-physical controller to align the PSCAD model with actual hardware performance.
Inverter Level 2 (L2): A derived ANATEM model was cross-verified against the validated PSCAD model for consistency across platforms.
Sungrow acknowledged the ONS's high technical collaboration throughout, vital for strengthening Brazil's National Interconnected System (SIN). The company dedicated substantial resources, including a local team, global R&D experts, and consultants, to achieve full modeling verification. Consequently, all Sungrow central, string, and modular inverters sold in Brazil now hold ONS approval.
"Sungrow's achievement demonstrates its commitment to high-performance, grid-compliant solutions supporting Brazil's power system stability and modernization," stated Ada Li, Vice President of Sungrow Americas.
