HiTHIUM Validates Energy Storage Safety with World-First Open-Door Fire Test at SNEC

Sets Energy Storage Safety Benchmark With Unprecedented Open-Door Fire Test

At SNEC 2025, energy storage technology provider HiTHIUM presented the full results of the world's first all open-door large-scale fire test on its ∞Block 5MWh Battery energy storage system. The company also received a large-scale fire test certification from UL Solutions during its "Leading the Future, Forged for Safety" event.

Project Manager Hualei Wang detailed the test background and execution. An on-site video showed the procedure where thermal runaway was intentionally induced in eight cells within Container A, with doors open for continuous oxygen flow. The test featured four extreme conditions: open combustion, minimal 15cm spacing between containers, deactivated fire suppression, and batteries at 100% charge.

  • Peak Performance: Fire temperatures reached 1,372°C after four hours. Crucially, adjacent containers B, C, and D recorded maximum cell temperatures of 42°C, 80°C, and 70°C respectively – all significantly below the UL9540A thermal runaway threshold.

  • Containment & Integrity: After 15 hours, open flames extinguished. Container A remained structurally intact. No fire spread or thermal runaway occurred in adjacent units, which sustained only minor external damage; internal modules were unaffected.

HiTHIUM attributed this outcome to its multi-layered safety design: heat-resistant materials and additives at the cell level, propagation-minimizing insulation and covers at the module level, and a high-strength, heat-resistant container structure at the system level.

UL Solutions awarded HiTHIUM certification confirming compliance with UL 9540A and NFPA 855 standards. Qifeng Xiao, UL Solutions' GM for Energy & Automation Asia Pacific, stated: "HiTHIUM’s test under full oxygen exposure goes far beyond standard closed-door tests. The results validate the system's self-contained protection and provide valuable data for global safety standards."

This transparent test demonstrated HiTHIUM's technical capabilities and confidence in its system safety, contributing significant data to the industry. The company stated it will continue investing in safety innovation to support the global green energy transition.
