In a significant move to decarbonize global logistics hubs, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), the world's foremost battery technology innovator, and APM Terminals, the global port and terminal operator within the A.P. Moller - Maersk group, have solidified a strategic partnership. The collaboration targets the rapid electrification of container handling equipment at terminals worldwide.

The alliance aims to leverage CATL's cutting-edge battery solutions and APM Terminals' extensive global network and operational expertise. The primary goal is to develop and deploy industry-leading, battery-powered alternatives to traditional fossil-fueled machinery like terminal tractors, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the port sector.

"We are excited to deepen our collaboration with CATL through this agreement, which directly supports our mission to decarbonize terminal operations using battery-electric equipment," stated Morrison, Head of Global Asset Category Management at APM Terminals.

Akin Li, Executive President of CATL Overseas Car Business, emphasized the partnership's potential: "Building on our joint efforts through the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA), this strategic partnership will accelerate the development of advanced solutions and drive down emissions at terminals globally."

Key Focus Areas of the Partnership:

  1. Electrification of Equipment: CATL will supply high-performance batteries and integrated system solutions specifically for APM Terminals' electric container handling machinery.

  2. Full Battery Lifecycle Management: Cooperation spans the entire battery journey – from advanced product development to after-sales support and establishing robust recycling processes.

  3. Emission Reduction Best Practices: CATL will provide expertise to minimize greenhouse gas emissions throughout the battery lifecycle, aiding APM Terminals in achieving its ambitious Scope 3 decarbonization targets.

  4. Accelerating Industry Transition: The partnership reinforces their shared commitment via ZEPA (co-founded by APM Terminals) to fast-track the adoption of zero-emission technologies across the port value chain.

Background on APM Terminals' Goals:

APM Terminals, operating in over 60 countries, alongside parent company Maersk, has set an industry-leading target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. This strategy involves deploying battery-electric equipment powered by renewable energy sources like solar and wind, optimizing operations for energy efficiency, and implementing sustainable infrastructure.

This collaboration between a battery technology pioneer and a global port operator marks a substantial step towards cleaner, more sustainable logistics infrastructure, with the potential to set new benchmarks for the entire industry.
