Xpeng X9 Super Extended-Range Sets New EV Benchmark

Xpeng X9

On November 20, Xpeng Motors officially launched the X9 Super Extended-Range MPV, built on an 800V high-voltage platform. Equipped with a 63.3 kWh battery pack, it achieves the longest pure electric range of 452 km among extended-range models, with a comprehensive range of up to 1,602 km. Notably, the vehicle features the industry's first mass-produced lithium iron phosphate 5C ultra-fast AI battery, offering the fastest charging capability for extended-range vehicles, exclusively supplied by CALB.

The extended-range electric vehicle market is experiencing explosive growth, driven by unique advantages that appeal to consumers. These include long ranges without range anxiety, flexible refueling and charging options, and the ability to function as a pure electric vehicle for daily commutes, positioning the segment for broad prospects. Data shows significant market expansion in 2024, with sales of extended-range vehicles in China reaching 1.167 million units. Research from WeiKe Network predicts sustained growth through 2031, with potential sales in China hitting 7.5 million units. Market surveys indicate over 90% of users prioritize pure electric mode for daily travel, effectively treating extended-range EVs as "pure electric cars with built-in generators." Policy changes are also shaping the industry: new regulations effective 2026 require a minimum pure electric range of 100 km under WLTC standards for purchase tax incentives, making long electric range a core competitive feature.

The Xpeng X9 Super Extended-Range sets a new technical benchmark with its 800V hybrid silicon carbide coaxial electric drive, which maintains power output even at 8% battery remaining. Features like dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and an innovative foldable third row, combined with a highly integrated rear axle, achieve 95.8% space utilization, making it a versatile MPV. Pricing starts at 309,800 yuan for the 1602 Max version and 329,800 yuan for the 1602 Ultra version, reflecting over a 10% drop from pre-sale prices. Xpeng reported record pre-sale orders, indicating strong market interest, and the reduced prices are expected to boost sales further. Market analysts highlight the X9's 5C ultra-fast charging battery, which supports 313 km of range in 10 minutes and meets new thermal safety standards, embodying a "have-it-all" approach with its blend of range, speed, and safety.

CALB addresses key challenges in extended-range battery technology with its 5C super extended-range battery pack, enabling breakthroughs in capacity, charging speed, and longevity. Compared to pure EVs, extended-range models demand more from batteries due to frequent shallow charge-discharge cycles and simultaneous high-power charging and discharging needs. CALB's innovations include ultra-low impedance design for enhanced safety during fast charging, high-thickness cells for improved energy density, and proprietary tab direct connection technology to optimize space efficiency. These advancements ensure the battery meets the rigorous demands of extended-range applications while excelling in performance metrics.

In summary, the launch of the Xpeng X9 Super Extended-Range and CALB's cutting-edge battery technology mark a new phase in extended-range EV development. Driven by policy and market trends, the industry is moving toward longer electric ranges, faster charging, and higher safety standards. As technology matures and the market grows, extended-range EVs are poised to play a more prominent role in the new energy vehicle landscape, offering diverse mobility solutions. The collaboration between Xpeng and CALB sets a new direction and benchmark for the sector.
