HiTHIUM, a stationary energy storage solutions provider, announced on Oct. 21 that it has entered the Canadian market. The company said it ranks among the top two globally for energy storage components and has surpassed 200 GWh in cumulative delivered capacity, with a focus exclusively on stationary energy storage technologies.
According to the company, Canada’s energy storage expansion requires reliable large-scale suppliers and a rapid local presence. Mizhi Zhang, HiTHIUM President of Global Business, said the company aims to deliver advanced, robust solutions to Canadian customers, from 8-hour long-duration energy storage to sodium-ion BESS designed for extreme weather, while being able to serve customers quickly wherever they are.
HiTHIUM introduced 4-hour and 8-hour BESS solutions to serve the market’s rapid buildout of utility-scale energy storage. It cited expectations that installed Canadian storage will double between 2025 and 2027 and that the country’s total wind, solar and energy storage capacity is on track to reach 50 GW by 2035. The company also unveiled a new 4 MWh sodium-ion storage solution designed for extra-long service life, storage durations of 2 to 8 hours and extremely cold climates such as Northern Canada.
Zhang said Canada’s clean energy targets and high safety and regulatory standards require partners that can deliver advanced technology that is tested and compliance-ready, while project developers must also account for the harsh climate. As a vertically integrated global solutions provider, HiTHIUM is structured to meet that combination of challenges, and its strategy of advancing both lithium-ion and sodium-ion storage is intended to give customers flexibility because the technologies are highly complementary, according to Zhang.
Jordan Hebbert, HiTHIUM Senior Manager of Americas Region, said partners including major energy developers, public utilities and industrial enterprises rely on the company’s certification readiness and long-term bankability from permitting through project commissioning. They also depend on proven durability, including performance in extreme weather, he said. Long-term operational data from North American and European projects has recently shown systems outperforming even the company’s guarantees, according to Hebbert. He added that HiTHIUM offers a wider range of durations and chemistry choices because customer energy storage needs are diverse.
The 4-hour BESS solution uses HiTHIUM’s ∞Power 6.25 MWh container, built on its own 1175 Ah cell. Most Canadian projects are currently designed around the 4-hour unit, which allows wind, solar and baseload output to be shifted to later peak times, strengthens grid reliability and supports greater renewable consumption as electrification raises demand. The ∞Power design fits more capacity into a typical 20-foot container and reduces project footprint because containers can be placed back-to-back and side-to-side.
HiTHIUM also developed what it describes as the first native 8-hour lithium-ion solution. Its 6.9 MWh 8-hour BESS uses the company’s own 1300 Ah cells, fewer components and a 25-year lifespan. It is designed to address curtailment and fill gaps for zero-downtime industrial segments such as AI data centers. For wind developers and data center operators, the 8-hour BESS offers risk reduction and greater revenue reliability, according to the company.
HiTHIUM also said it worked with UL Solutions at the start of 2026 on an independently conducted extreme fire test of the intrinsic safety systems in its 6.25 MWh block. A container was subjected to 24 hours of extreme combustion conditions with its doors opened for maximum thermal spread, while neighboring containers were placed 15 cm away. Only passive safety systems were enabled. The results validated HiTHIUM’s multi-layer safety architecture, with the tested container structurally intact, no thermal propagation across containers and cell temperatures in adjacent containers remaining below safety thresholds, the company said.
