Global battery giant CATL has raised the bar for large-scale energy storage solutions with the debut of its TENER Stack, the world’s first 9MWh ultra-high-capacity system set for mass production by 2025. Unveiled ahead of ees Europe 2025, this cutting-edge technology promises to reshape how industries and utilities manage energy storage amid surging global demand driven by AI, data centers, and industrial electrification.
The TENER Stack integrates CATL’s proprietary lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells with a five-year zero-degradation guarantee, delivering a 45% improvement in volumetric efficiency and a 50% increase in energy density over traditional 20-foot container systems. With a single unit storing 9MWh—enough to power 150 EVs or sustain a German household for six years—the system drastically reduces land use. Developers deploying 800MWh storage can cut container numbers by one-third and boost land efficiency by 40%, lowering total construction costs by up to 20%.
Addressing logistical hurdles, CATL’s "two-in-one" design splits the system into half-height units weighing under 36 tonnes, complying with transport regulations in 99% of global markets. This innovation slashes specialized shipping costs by 35% and enables deployment in height-restricted areas like bridges and rural zones.
Amid heightened fire safety scrutiny, TENER Stack features CATL’s thermally stable LFP chemistry, triple-layer fire insulation (2-hour resistance), and seismic resilience up to magnitude 9 earthquakes. Enhanced gas sensors activate suppression systems 35% faster, while an overhead thermal management system reduces noise to 65dB(A), ideal for urban installations.
CATL’s ESS portfolio now spans 1,700+ global projects. The TENER Stack builds on its predecessor models, combining zero-degradation tech with unprecedented scalability. “This isn’t just about storage—it’s about unlocking energy accessibility worldwide,” said Hank Zhao, CTO of ESS Europe at CATL. “Future energy density breakthroughs will amplify value from even smaller footprints.”
With its dual compatibility for centralized and string PCS architectures, TENER Stack offers seamless integration with grid infrastructure, positioning CATL to lead the charge in sustainable energy transition. As industries race to meet decarbonization goals, this innovation could redefine cost and efficiency benchmarks for utility-scale storage.
