At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Chinese battery manufacturer CATL officially introduced TECTRANS II, its next-generation battery solution tailored for the commercial vehicle sector.
During the launch, Akin Li, Executive President of CATL Overseas Business, characterized commercial vehicle electrification as the "third wave of the global energy transition," emphasizing the company's intention to collaborate with international partners across products, energy services, and infrastructure ecosystems.
Scenario Adaptability Designed to accommodate diverse commercial applications, the TECTRANS II platform focuses on operational versatility:
Multi-Scenario Scalability: By varying the number of standardized battery modules, the platform adjusts to different payload requirements and supports driving ranges up to 1,000 kilometers.
Flexible Architecture: The system integrates with both central-drive and e-axle vehicle configurations while enabling seamless switching between plug-in charging and battery swapping.
Standardized Upgradability: With standardized external dimensions, electrical interfaces, and communication protocols, the architecture allows vehicle platforms to adopt future battery chemistry upgrades without requiring major redesigns.
Streamlined Development: The modular framework enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to cut vehicle development cycles by 50% and reduce R&D expenditures by 60% to 70%.
Lifecycle Economics The platform emphasizes total cost of ownership (TCO) efficiency throughout the vehicle's lifespan:
Lower Upfront Costs: Standardized module design eliminates the need to engineer customized battery packs for every vehicle model, reducing initial investment risks for OEMs.
Operational Performance:
Energy Density: Delivering 170 Wh/kg—roughly 13% above the current industry average—the system enables vehicles to carry approximately 0.6 additional tonnes of payload at equivalent battery weight.
Range and Fast Charging: Maximum configurations offer up to 1,000 km of range and support megawatt-level charging, achieving an 80% charge state in 25 minutes to minimize operational downtime.
System Efficiency: Utilizing a full-tab low-impedance architecture, the battery achieves a 96% system round-trip efficiency (RTE) to minimize energy loss during daily operations.
Residual Value Support: Engineered specifically for heavy-duty truck operations, the battery offers a service life of 12 years or 1.5 million kilometers with a guaranteed 70% capacity retention rate.
Safety and Structural Durability TECTRANS II incorporates multiple layers of physical and electronic protection for heavy-duty operations:
Hardware Resilience: The battery enclosure features a hot-formed steel top cover rated to withstand 10,000 load cycles from a 180 kg force, a bottom plate engineered for 1,000 J impact resistance, and extruded-aluminum side structures providing up to 250 kN of lateral crush resistance. The assembly supports 15-year corrosion protection and maintains IPXXB safety standards during high-voltage maintenance.
System Redundancy: A multi-branch independent battery management system (BMS) allows the pack to isolate a faulty branch while remaining branches continue power delivery. The system also includes proprietary insulation fault-location diagnostics and multi-layer cybersecurity protection compliant with international standard protocols.
Backed by full-vehicle torsion and external fire testing, CATL's TECTRANS II represents the company's latest push to expand high-durability battery technology across the global commercial vehicle market.
