All on-site civil and equipment installation work has now been completed for the Dunhuang Guosheng Narada 200MW/800MWh Standalone Energy Storage Demonstration Project, marking a key milestone for the first grid-side independent storage facility in the city. Once the station is commissioned and begins commercial operation, it is expected to address the existing shortfall in the regional power grid’s peak-shaving capacity while significantly broadening the utilization scope of renewable energy sources.
Situated within the Dunhuang Photovoltaic Industrial Park, the project represents a total investment of RMB 760 million. The DC-side system comprises 160 sets of 5MWh energy storage battery containers, which are built around Narada Power’s in-house developed 314Ah lithium battery cells – a core component independently engineered by the company.
The local environment, characterized by frequent sandstorms and extreme diurnal temperature variations, presents substantial hurdles for system reliability and thermal stability. In response, Narada’s 5MWh+ liquid-cooled energy storage solution incorporates IP67-rated protection for both critical electrical components and battery PACKs, complemented by multi-tiered safety barriers that effectively prevent dust intrusion, thereby ensuring consistent and secure operations. Furthermore, the intelligent liquid-cooling temperature regulation system, featuring a multi-stage variable-diameter piping design, maintains the temperature differential within each battery module below 3°C.
As the region’s energy storage capacity continues to scale up, Dunhuang is well positioned to evolve from a major wind-and-solar power base into an integrated demonstration hub that combines wind, solar, hydrogen, and storage technologies. This transition is expected to yield a replicable “Dunhuang Model” that can support the high-quality expansion of new energy infrastructure across Northwest China and the wider nation.
Upon full commissioning, the project will substantially enhance the local grid’s frequency regulation and peak-load management capabilities, reinforce system stability, and accelerate the efficient integration of renewable generation in Dunhuang – ultimately driving the sustainable growth of the area’s green energy sector.
