CATL and Solarpro Sign 2 GWh Sodium-Ion Storage Agreement

In a move that signals growing momentum for next-generation energy storage technologies, CATL and Solarpro Technology AD (Solarpro) have inked a strategic cooperation agreement for 2 GWh of sodium-ion battery systems. The deal marks a notable step forward in the adoption of alternative storage solutions and the push for more resilient energy infrastructure across Eastern Europe.

The partnership will leverage the unique performance characteristics of sodium-ion technology—particularly its strong low-temperature performance and extended cycle life—to develop tailored storage solutions for various applications throughout Central and Eastern Europe. The companies have set their sights on commissioning the region's first sodium-ion energy storage project.

Solarpro brings substantial regional expertise to the table, with a strong track record in turnkey project delivery, system integration, and long-term operations and maintenance across Eastern Europe's renewable energy sector. For CATL, the collaboration offers valuable insights into local market dynamics, operational challenges, and emerging application scenarios for its sodium-ion technology.

CATL, a global frontrunner in sodium-ion battery innovation backed by advanced R&D, system design, and field validation capabilities, will work alongside Solarpro to refine storage solutions specifically optimized for the region's climate conditions, grid requirements, and evolving energy landscape. The ultimate goal is to accelerate large-scale adoption of sodium-ion technology in Eastern Europe.

"We see strong potential for sodium-ion deployment in Lithuania and other Eastern European markets given its clear advantages in low-temperature performance and long cycle life," said Krasen Mateev, CEO of Solarpro Holding, part of the Vienna-based Renalfa Solarpro Group. "We look forward to working with CATL to further optimize these solutions and identify the most suitable application scenarios."

Amanda Xu, CTO of ESS and President of ESS Europe at CATL, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: "The efficient teamwork between the two teams has revealed great potential. We look forward to the successful implementation of the first sodium-ion battery project in Central and Eastern Europe."

The new agreement builds on an existing relationship between the two companies. In May 2026, CATL and Solarpro successfully connected a 602 MWh large-scale battery storage project to Bulgaria's national power grid, a development that increased the country's total energy storage capacity by 10%.
